Abstract
Background: Metabolic syndrome and frailty are associated with functional decline in the elderly. An elderly individual¡¯s risk of frailty reportedly decreases as the protein intake decreases. However, in Korea, carbohydrates comprise 70% of the total energy source for more than half of elderly patients with metabolic syndrome. This study aimed to determine the relationship between protein/carbohydrate intake ratio and metabolic syndrome in an elderly Korean population.

Methods: A total of 3,758 participants of the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted from 2016 to 2018 were analyzed. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the association of protein/carbohydrate intake ratio quartile and metabolic syndrome.

Results: No significant association between protein/carbohydrate intake rate and metabolic syndrome was identified in male or female aged 65 years or older. The logistic regression analysis indicated that male had a higher triglyceride index.

Conclusion: A higher triglyceride index and higher protein versus carbohydrate intake were detected in elderly Korean male aged 65 years or older.
